These diseases, the Nations No. 1 and No. 3 killers, claim more than 910,000 American lives a year. The association invested more than $543 million in fiscal year 2005-06 for research, professional and public education, and advocacy. The American Heart Association wants to help people live longer, stronger lives through a new groundbreaking movement – Start!, which will be known as the movement that gets America walking by creating a culture of physical activity and health. Start! will help people stop talking and start walking—the exercise that has the lowest dropout rate of any physical activity. Physical inactivity significantly increases the risk of cardiovascular disease. Seventy percent of Americans don’t get enough exercise, blaming lack of time and lack of motivation. Ignoring fitness and health increases the chances of heart disease, stroke, and other diseases.
