Meet, Survivor, Tari Kendall of Gainesville, Florida - Tari Kendall awakes thinking she caught the flu during the night. “I had weak arms, pain between my shoulder blades and an upset stomach,” she recalls. Her husband knows not to ignore her symptoms. Relying on information he received just five days earlier at the Gainesville Start! Heart Walk, he realizes Tari is having a major heart attack.

Tari seems like an unlikely candidate for heart issues. She is just 43 years old with an active lifestyle and career as a dance instructor. “These were not the typical warning signs I knew,” Tari notes. “Imagine my shock to discover I was experiencing the No. 1 killer of women.”

Thanks to her husband’s quick thinking, Tari continues to be active in her many life roles, the newest of which is heart attack survivor. “Without the research, education and information provided by the American Heart Association, I wouldn’t be here today,” she says. Her story illustrates perfectly why everyone should know their risk and recognize the symptoms of heart attack.

• Attend the Start! Heart Walk and celebrate your achievement.
