The American Heart Association works to save people of all ages from heart disease and stroke. Newspaper columnist Steve Blow, himself a heart-attack survivor, recalls vividly the terror of heart disease becoming a father-and-son affair. My 24-year-old son Corey was dying in my arms. His eyes were rolled back in his head and he was drawing weird, shuddering breaths. His heart had stopped. “Breathe, Corey, breathe!” Paramedics rushed him to a hospital. Four or five were atop him, working urgently in the ambulance, for what seemed an eternity. “Hang on, Corey!” I called. “You hang on.” I hoped for once he would listen to his father. He got the last of three jolts of electric shocks of a defibrillator as we arrived at the ER. Only then did his heart kick in again.
